Being factual in the  post truth era

Fake news are the deliberate creation of factually incorrect content to mislead people for some gain. Social media and penetration of internet has increased the menace. According to pew research centre study it is found that many people are getting confused and are even thinking them as factual. It has significantly influenced the elections in india, USA and many other countries.

Germany is considering imposing a penalty of euro5,00,000 fine on social media if its shares fake and Italy is setting up a special agency to combat fake news.  Rigorous standards on fake news and imposition of fines on organizations falling short of these can be a way forward.

  4. Peace is a long term process of educating humanity with values of compassion.
  5. Education shall cultivate ones judgement rather than making people obedient to an ideology. For this, a massive re evaluation of pedagogy is necessary.

In a nut shell as Kant stated the aim of education is moralization of man.

Education is a medium which leads to economic as well as social development of the country. It has the potential to convert human as labor into human as a capital for the betterment of the society.

How education can bring a social change:-

    1. Cycle of socialization:- After family it is second most import part of this cycle which shapes the student’s morals. This morals helps him to distinguish between what is right and what is wrong.

    2. cognitive thinking:-education triggers the cognitive process of a child. It helps to find the reasons for why such act was performed. It compels a child to think from diverse angle before taking any action.

    3. Nurturing of values:- Values such as humanity, compassion, empathy are nurtured through education

    4. Emotional Quotient:- It develops emotional quotient which helps him to guide his own emotions while taking any decision. It is very essential to understand the emotions of others especially in the country like India where diversity of religion and tradition is a part of life.

    Why reform is needed

    1. mere competitive nature:- Education witnessed as the competitive platform. Students are busy in securing good marks rather than acquiring knowledge

    2. Rising discontent:- Reservation in schools based on caste has imbibed the feeling of haterade in the mind of students against lower caste.

    3. Source of business:- Teachers and educators are seeing education as a good source of income. This platform these days is used to drag income rather than providing good source of knowledge

    4. Diversified syllabus:- Every state focuses on its own history. Syllabus varies according to states. This hampers the feeling of unity

    Reforms needed:-

    1. focus on imparting knowledge:- It is essential to divert the focus from rote learning to good knowledge.

    2. creating awareness :- student should be made aware about why reservation is necessary to lower caste. This will change their way of looking towards students belonging to different caste

    3. informal training:- a short practical exercise should be given to students by developing an environment which could boost their thinking. For example a case study which could trigger the morals of students and instigate them to think through emotional angle.

    4. Common and updated syllabus:- To impart the feeling of unity and common brotherhood.

The prime motive of any education policy of India is social transformation. It means to inculcate values in the society that drive it towards peace, humanity, compassion, rationality etc. But it has not achieved it. Today society is divided based on caste, religion etc. It is driven by economic interest without having any social responsibilities leading to Rift in society. In this context our education system requires many reforms to supplement this.
    1) Autocratic to democratic – Today schools are driven by Autocratic systems where more stress is given to rote learning( Pass fail system). It leads to loss of intrinsic values of education. In this context CCE along with No detention policy should be implemented effectively.
    2) Teacher student ratio- For internalisation of values role of teacher is very important as it provides the direction to student. In schools teacher interaction with students is minimal due to low teacher student ratio.
    3) Technical vs Humanity- In higher education more stress is given to technical education than humanity studies. And with inclusion of foreign universities, the situation is going to worsen. In this respect inclusion of human studies along with technical education in higher universities should be implemented as proposed by Yashpal panel.
According to Kant ” Education is moralization of man”.It can lead to social tranformation. It is a continuous process requiring reforms in education system.RTE 2009 is a progressive step towards it.

Swami Vivekanand said, “Education is the manifestation of divine perfection already existing in man”, the only way to bring it out is through nurturing it by self actualization. This is where our state, society and family plays a role.

Social Change through education can be brought in following way-

    # Equality in education by affirmative action of the state. This bring at par both gender and classes of society and remove and kind of discrimination.

    # Educating women, empowering them with job opportunities so that the future generations are nurtured well.

    # Development of cognitive abilities in child through -filed visits, sports, yoga, adventures and education, trips along with academics.

Our education system has burduned child to heavy loads of books right from very start of education and restricted them to class room. The pattern of CCE introduced by CBSE over burden child to only academics. This restricts cognitive ability, turns them mere crammer, take away their childhood and ultimately a non-social person confining to books and computer knowledge without actualizing ones self.

Therefore, the government should incorporate in the National Education Policy a wide range of activities for early childhood education. Merely making compulsory education wont ensure nation’s peace and progress.

Unity in Diversity is a salient feature of India. To preserve such glory, sustainable social change is required. Through education, this can be assured.

Despite of several laws, there are incidents like the recent mass molestation of women in Bangalore. These can be prevented only when there are strong morals rooted in society. Educating children with values at early ages, though a long process, is essential. It is such age, when they start developing perspectives regarding the outer world. So, it is our responsibility to instil positive morals, if we were to aspire a better tomorrow.

Moralisation requires an efficient education system. Indian system of education had undergone a change with the advent of British. The current system, though tweaked for betterment through different laws, still requires reform in the some aspects. Continuous evaluation method shall improve assessing children. Teaching methodologies like story telling, practical approach will bring in curiosity among students towards the areas of study. Sports, which are often neglected in schools actually are essential for healthy body and mind. All these require sufficient and competent teachers, good infrastructure, better management. The government is currently working on National Education Policy. This is an important opportunity to address bottlenecks in the system.

Institutional changes becomes sustainable only when there is societal acceptance. Hence, it is our duty to strive for the necessary social change by collective efforts.

Education is the process by which an individual not only gains professional knowledge but also develops understanding through self reflection. Education in India has got limited to professional achievements as the moral part of education got somewhere diminished. People are getting lot more vulnerable and aggressive to changing times where they are easily mobilized with narrow ideas that have vested interest.
Education system in India needs an overhaul because:
    1. Education system has the responsibility of imparting moral values in children which is missing.
    2. Education is seen as course that must be undertaken to live a successful life, whereas education is a way of life.
    3. Young generation is highly impressionable to external ideas as they have not understood their self through moral education.
    4. Education for world peace and brotherhood is missing
Social changes are brought by person those who reflect and understand the nature of self and others. Those who are self-reflecting have high moral standards and make an informed decision, which is beneficial for the society and the nation, whether it be in the election or individual choices.
