Why in News?

India-Armenia ties gained prominence as Armenia facilitated evacuation of Indians from Iran amid the Iran-Israel crisis, highlighting how Delhi’s long-term diplomatic and defence partnership with Yerevan is paying off.

Description:

  1. Defence Cooperation Strengthened: India has emerged as a significant defence partner for Armenia. Since 2020, Armenia has purchased Indian weapon systems like the Swathi Weapon Locating Radar, Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launchers, and anti-drone systems.
  2. Strategic Alignment Against Turkey-Pakistan Axis: Armenia’s geo-political rival, Azerbaijan, is backed by Turkey and Pakistan—both countries with strained relations with India. This has led to a natural strategic convergence between India and Armenia.
  3. Support on Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict: While India maintains a neutral stance, it has advocated for peaceful resolution through dialogue in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, indirectly aligning with Armenia’s diplomatic position.
  4. Connectivity and North-South Corridor: Armenia supports India’s efforts in the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). It is seen as a counterbalance to China’s BRI and strengthens India’s access to Central Asia and Europe.
  5. Recent Diplomatic & Evacuation Ties (2025): In June 2025, Armenia helped facilitate the evacuation of Indian citizens from Iran amid the Iran-Israel conflict as part of Operation Sindhu, showcasing deepening diplomatic trust.
