The AERB granted NPCIL a five-year licence to operate two indigenously built 700 MWe pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) at Kakrapar, Gujarat, after rigorous multi-tier safety reviews—boosting India’s fleet-mode PHWR expansion programme.
Description:
- Constitution: Constituted on 15 November 1983 by the President of India under the Atomic Energy Act, 1962.
- Legal Authority: Its powers derive from:
- The Atomic Energy Act, 1962
- The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986
- Mission: To ensure that the use of ionizing radiation and nuclear energy in India does not pose undue risk to the health of people and the environment.
- Composition of the Board:
- Not more than five members in total, including:
- A full-time Chairman
- A full-time Member-Secretary
- The Board includes full-time and part-time members
- The Board is responsible to the Atomic Energy Commission
- Not more than five members in total, including:
- Administrative and Executive Functions:
- Chairman, AERB: Holds executive authority.
- Department of Atomic Energy (DAE):
- Provides administrative support (budget, establishment, parliamentary work, etc.)
- Industrial Safety Role:
- AERB administers provisions of the Factories Act, 1948
- Oversees industrial safety in DAE units as per Section 23 of the Atomic Energy Act, 1962
