The National Education Policy has been a victim of ignorance

Paper: GS – II, Subject: Society and Social Justice, Topic: Social Sector- Education, Issue: Issues plaguing National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Context:

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 needs further introspection after five years of its implementation.

Key Highlights:

Key features of National Education Policy (NEP):

  • Early Childhood Education (ECE): National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recognizes ages 3–8 as critical for foundational learning focussing on Play-based education, Teacher training and Infrastructure upgrades.
  • Language of Instruction: NEP recommends mother tongue/local language as medium for early grades to aid literacy.

Higher Education Reforms:

  • NEP aims to strengthen teacher training and education institutions.
  • Introduced four-year integrated B.Ed. programs.
  • Improved qualification and recruitment of educators.
  • Long-term goal is to have a restructured and professionalised teaching force.

5-Year Status of NEP 2020:

  • NEP 2020 has completed five years, but full implementation is still in early stages.
  • COVID-19 pandemic and system readiness slowed down rollout making it premature to judge its impact.

Issues plaguing NEP:

  • False Claims of Implementation: Some states claim full implementation without substantial groundwork.
  • Political Misreading: Misinterpretation stems from lack of reading or understanding, political motives and fear-based narratives
  • Three-Language Formula: In existence since 1968, NEP 2020 only made it more flexible and locally responsive.Still, it became a political flashpoint.
  • False Claim of Privatization: NEP focuses on strengthening public education but it was falsely claimed that it promotes privatization.

Conclusion:

NEP 2020 aligns with the constitutional promise of equity and quality education.True success depends on accurate understanding, faithful implementationand avoiding political distortion.
