Why in News?

Australian Army Chief Lieutenant General Simon Stuart will visit India from August 10–14, 2025, to deepen Indo-Pacific military ties. His visit highlights growing defence cooperation, including joint exercises like AUSTRAHIND and strategic alignment under the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Institutional Frameworks:

  1. MoU on Defence Cooperation – Signed in 2006.
  2. Bilateral Defence Ministers’ Dialogue – Institutionalised in 2009.
  3. Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) – Established in 2020.
  4. Mutual Logistics Support Agreement (MLSA) – Signed in 2020.
  5. 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue – First held in 2021.
  6. India designated as “Top-Tier Security Partner” – In Australia’s 2023 Defence Strategic Review.
  7. Air-to-Air Refuelling Agreement – Signed in 2024.

Joint Military Exercises:

  • AUSINDEX – Bilateral naval exercise.
  • AUSTRAHIND – Bilateral army exercise.
  • Participation in multilateral exercises – e.g., Malabar, Pitch Black.

Significance of the Defence Partnership:

  • Enhances maritime security in the Indo-Pacific.
