Why in News?
The Environment Ministry will invite public objections and reconsider Sariska Tiger Reserve’s Critical Tiger Habitat boundary rationalisation, following Supreme Court directives, amid concerns over procedural lapses and potential benefits to over 50 marble and dolomite mines.
Description:
- State: Rajasthan (Alwar district).
- Mountain range: Spread across the Aravalli Hills, the world’s oldest mountain range.
- Area: ~866 sq. km.
- Declared as:
- Wildlife Sanctuary – 1955
- National Park – 1979
- Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger – 1978.
- Landscape: Rocky terrain, dry deciduous forests, thorn scrub, hilly cliffs, and grasslands.
Vegetation & Ecology:
- Vegetation type:
- Northern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests
- Northern Tropical Thorn Forests
- Dominant tree: Dhok (Anogeissus pendula) (covers ~90% of area).
- Other species: Salar, Kadaya, Ber, Gol, Gugal, Bamboo, Banyan, Kair, etc.
Flora & Fauna:
- Flagship species: Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris).
- Other animals: Leopard, Caracal, Jungle cat, Sambhar, Chital, Nilgai, Four-horned antelope (Chousingha), Wild boar, Rhesus macaque, Langur, Hyena, Jackal.
- Birds: Over 200 species, including peafowl, sand grouse, golden-backed woodpecker, crested serpent eagle.
Cultural & Historical Sites Inside the Reserve:
- Temples & forts: Pandupol Hanuman temple, Neelkanth Mahadev temple, Bhangarh Fort, Ajabgarh Fort, Pratapgarh.
- Lakes: Siliserh Lake, Jai Samand Lake.
- Once a hunting ground of Alwar royalty.
