- Tsunami & Coastal Hazard Monitoring:
- Operates Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC) for tsunamis, storm surges, high waves.
- Designated Regional Tsunami Service Provider (RTSP) by UNESCO-Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).
- Advisory Services for Fisherfolk:
- Potential Fishing Zone (PFZ) advisories.
- Short-term Ocean State Forecasts (OSF) (3–7 days).
- Ocean Observation & Data:
- Maintains Ocean Observing Systems (OOS); archives data at ESSO-INCOIS Data Centre.
- Recognized as National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC) by International Oceanographic Data Exchange (IODE).
- Ocean Modelling & Analysis:
- Generates Global Ocean Analysis Data (GOAD) for monsoon prediction and climate modeling.
- Seismic & GNSS Network:
- Operates Indian Seismic and Global Navigation Satellite System Network (ISGN) for seismic and geodetic data.
- Data Centre Roles:
- National & Regional Argo Data Centre, regional hub for Indian Ocean Global Ocean Observing System (IOGOOS).
International Collaborations:
- Member: IOC (UNESCO) | Founding member: IOGOOS, Partnership for Observing the Oceans (POGO)
- Hosts: IOGOOS Secretariat, Sustained Indian Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Research (SIBER) Programme Office
