The Gyan Bharatam Mission, a Culture Ministry initiative to document, preserve, and digitise India’s manuscripts, is set to sign MoUs with 20 institutes as cluster and independent centres, strengthening the National Digital Repository and manuscript conservation efforts.

Objective:
- To survey, document, conserve, and digitize over 1 crore manuscripts across India.
- To create a National Digital Repository (NDR) of Indian Knowledge Systems.
- To make ancient manuscripts accessible globally for education and research.
Key Features:
- Massive Coverage: Over 1 crore manuscripts targeted.
- Digital Repository: AI-driven archiving, metadata tagging, translation tools.
- Collaboration: With academic, cultural, and private institutions.
- Technology Use: AI and 3D imaging for manuscript preservation.
- Budget: Increased from ₹3.5 crore to ₹60 crore; Total Outlay – ₹482.85 crore (2024–31).
- Funding Pattern:
- 70% released initially.
- 30% after submission of progress & utilization reports.
What is a Manuscript?
A handwritten document on paper, bark, or palm leaves, at least 75 years old, holding scientific, historical, or artistic importance.
Example: Bakhshali Manuscript (3rd–4th century BCE) – earliest known use of zero.
Significance:
- Preserves India’s knowledge heritage and traditional wisdom.
- Supports the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) initiative.
- Promotes research in Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit, and regional languages.
- Enhances global access to India’s cultural heritage.
