Why in News?
A CITES committee has recommended that India temporarily halt issuing permits for importing endangered animals for zoos and rescue centres, until the country reviews its due diligence processes. The recommendation followed a visit to Vantara’s rescue facility in Jamnagar.
Description:
- Full Form: Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
- Origin: Conceived at IUCN meeting (1963) → Entered into force in 1975.
- Nature: Voluntary international agreement ensuring international trade does not threaten species survival.
- Administered by: UNEP Secretariat at Geneva, Switzerland.
- Scientific support: IUCN provides technical support.
- Members / Parties: 185 parties (India ratified in 1976).
- Legal Nature: Legally binding, but implemented through national legislation.
- Decision Making Body: Conference of Parties (CoP): CoP 3 hosted by India (New Delhi, 1981).
- Trade Regulation: Licensing system for import / export / re-export of listed species.
- Database: CITES Trade Database → managed by UNEP-WCMC.
- Species Protected: ~40,900 species (approx 6,610 animals + 34,310 plants)

- ICCWC (International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime) (2010).
