Why in News?
Bhutan hosted the first-ever Global Peace Prayer Festival (GPPF) in Thimphu from 4–19 November 2025 bringing together religious leaders from the three main branches of Buddhism — Mahayana, Theravada and Vajrayana. India supported the event “in cash and kind” and transported Lord Buddha’s relics from the National Museum (New Delhi) to Bhutan for public veneration.

- Venue: Changlimithang Ground, Thimphu (Bhutan)
- Participation: Over 150 Buddhist masters + thousands of devotees from across Asian Buddhist regions.
- Partners: Royal Government of Bhutan + Central Monastic Body.
- Simultaneous prayers were also conducted at Kuenselphodrang.
Religious & Symbolic Significance:
- First time Bhutan united all 3 major Buddhist traditions at this scale.
- Message: Peace, compassion, healing → Bhutan projecting “soft power spiritual diplomacy”.

India’s Role:
- Govt of India provided support (cash & kind)
- Helped transport Lord Buddha’s relics → seen as strengthening India–Bhutan ties.
- PM Modi visit expected → adds geopolitical weight.
