Gujarat’s Ambaji white marble has received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its high-quality pure white stone. Granted to the Ambaji Marbles Quarry and Factory Association, the recognition highlights the marble’s durability, heritage value, and extensive use in major religious structures.
Description:
- Ambaji White Marble is a premium variety of marble known for its stunning white appearance and unique natural patterns.
- It is named after Ambaji, a town in Banaskantha district, Gujarat, where it is predominantly quarried.
- Also known as Amba White Marble or Ambe White Marble.
- Characterized by:
- Pristine white colour
- Subtle grey or beige veining
- Veins vary from fine and delicate to bold and pronounced, making each slab unique.
- Variations in veining occur due to natural mineral impurities present during marble formation.
- Known for its long-lasting shine, strength, and durability.
- Its smooth, polished surface adds to its elegance and architectural value.
- Extensively used in: Luxury architecture, High-end flooring, Sculptures, Monuments
- Marble is a metamorphic rock, formed when limestone undergoes metamorphism.
- Composed mainly of calcite (CaCO₃) and sometimes includes: Clay minerals, Micas, Quartz, Pyrite, Iron oxides, Graphite.
- Metamorphism causes recrystallization of calcite, producing interlocking calcite crystals, giving marble its smooth texture.
- Dolomitic marble forms when dolostone is subjected to heat and pressure.
- Marble formation mainly occurs at:
- Convergent plate boundaries (regional metamorphism) → large-scale transformation of limestone.
- Contact metamorphism → heating of limestone/dolostone by nearby magma bodies.
- Both processes result in denser, more crystalline rock with high polishability.
