Context
The Union Government is considering amending MGNREGA to increase guaranteed employment days from 100 to 125 and rename the Act as “Pujya Bapu Gramin Rozgar Yojana”, following Cabinet-level discussions.
About MGNREGA
- Full Name: Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act
- Enacted: 2005 (operational from Feb 2006)
- Nature: Statutory, demand-driven, rights-based
- Guarantee: 100 days of wage employment per rural household per financial year
- Implementing Ministry: Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD)
- Coverage: All rural districts of India
- Wage-material ratio: 60:40 at district level.

- Provide livelihood security in rural areas
- Act as a fallback employment option during distress
- Create durable rural assets
- Promote decentralised planning via Gram Panchayats
