Telangana Police: FIR Registration at Doorstep

Why in News?

Telangana becomes the first State in India to allow registration of FIRs at the complainant’s residence in sensitive cases. Initiative launched by the Telangana CID as “citizen-centric, on-site registration of FIRs.”

Description:

What is the Normal Procedure for FIR Registration?

  • FIR is usually registered at a police station.
  • Complaint must be given in the presence of police.
  • Police witness the complaint and then draft/register the FIR.

New Change in Telangana:

  • FIRs can now be registered at the complainant’s home.
  • Police visit the residence and complete FIR registration on-site.

When Will FIRs Be Registered at Homes?

Applicable specifically to sensitive cases:

  1. Offences against women & children
  2. Offences affecting human body
  3. Under POCSO Act
  4. Under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act
  5. Under Prohibition of Child Marriage Act
  6. Under Telangana Prohibition of Ragging Act

Why?

Victims may be:

  • Physically unable to travel
  • Emotionally distressed
  • Unable to leave home due to vulnerability
  • Ensuring immediate access to justice is the goal.

New Process:

  1. Complainant contacts police (phone/online/in person).
  2. If the information falls under the listed categories:
  3. Police station with jurisdiction assigns: Local SHO, Senior officer, or Officer of Zero FIR jurisdiction.
  4. Officer visits complainant’s residence.
  5. Records information, prepares FIR on-site, and registers it.
  6. FIR copy is handed over to complainant immediately.
  7. Case is transferred to jurisdictional police station the same day.

  • Victim no longer needs to physically visit a police station.
  • Ensures safety, privacy, and dignity of the victim.
  • Promotes citizen-centric policing.
