What is UNRWA?
- United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) is a UN agency providing relief, education, healthcare and social services to Palestine refugees.
Establishment:
- Established: 1949
- Mandate: UN General Assembly Resolution 302 (IV)
- Created after the 1948 Arab–Israeli conflict.
Who are Palestine Refugees?
- Persons whose normal place of residence was Palestine between June 1946 and May 1948 and who lost home and livelihood due to the conflict.
- Includes descendants of original refugees.
Area of Operations:
UNRWA operates in five fields: Gaza Strip, West Bank (including East Jerusalem), Jordan, Lebanon, Syria
Funding Structure:
- Voluntary contributions only (no assessed UN contributions).
- Major donors: EU, USA (funding fluctuates), Gulf countries, Japan.
- Faces chronic funding shortages.
India’s Position:
- India has consistently supported UNRWA.
- Supports Two-State Solution andhumanitarian assistance to Palestinians
