The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has revised norms to extend the free cancellation and modification window for air tickets from 24 hours to 48 hours.

- Legal Framework: Operates under the Aircraft Act, 1934 and Aircraft Rules, 1937.
- Nature: It is a regulatory body functioning under executive and delegated legislative authority.
Core Mandate & Powers:
- Safety Oversight: Primary regulator for civil aviation safety, including airworthiness and operational standards.
- Licensing Authority: Issues licenses for Pilots, Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs), and Air Operator Permits (AOPs).
- Rule Making: Issues Civil Aviation Requirements (CARs) and Aeronautical Information Circulars (AICs), which are binding under the Aircraft Rules.
- Enforcement: Empowered to ground aircraft, suspend/cancel licenses, and impose penalties for safety violations.
- ICAO Compliance: Ensures India adheres to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs).
