- Origin: Madurai, Tamil Nadu.
- GI Status: Granted on 12 December 2005 (Geographical Indications of Goods Act, 1999).
- Community: Traditionally crafted by the Saurashtrian community, who migrated from Gujarat to Madurai in the 17th century.
- Unique Aesthetic: Known for the “dotted” pattern, inspired by the star-spangled sky over the Vaigai River.

Production Process:

- Finishing: Knots are untied; the fabric is washed, starched, and sun-dried to set the color and texture.

GI registered under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. Protects authenticity and prevents imitation. Promotes regional identity and rural livelihood security.
