Cambodia–Thailand border

Context:

The Preah Vihear Temple and Ta Moan Thom Temple have come into focus amid renewed Cambodia–Thailand border tensions.

About the Temples:

  • Location: Both temples are situated in the Dangrek Mountains along the Cambodia–Thailand border.
  • Period: Built during the Khmer Empire (11th–12th centuries).
  • Religion: Originally Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, later associated with Buddhist worship.
  • Architecture: Built mainly of sandstone in classical Khmer architectural style, located on elevated ridges.
  • Preah Vihear Temple: A UNESCO World Heritage Site (2008); the International Court of Justice (1962; reaffirmed 2013) ruled that the temple lies in Cambodia.
  • Ta Moan Thom Temple: Located directly on the border ridge and remains disputed between Cambodia and Thailand.
