March 20, 2026 marks 99 years of the Mahad Satyagraha (1927), with centenary commemorations underway.
About Mahad Satyagraha:
- Led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on 20 March 1927 at Mahad (Raigad, Maharashtra).
- Aim: Secure Dalit access to public water sources (Chavdar Tank).
- Symbolised by Ambedkar drinking water from the Chavdar Tank, asserting civil rights.
- Based on the Bole Resolution (1923) of the Bombay Legislative Council, opening public spaces to Depressed Classes (poorly implemented).
- Followed by Manusmriti Dahan (25 Dec 1927) led by Ambedkar, A.V. Chitre, G.N. Sahasrabudhe, and Surendranath Tipnis.
