Helium

Context: Rising geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region have raised concerns over global helium supply affecting MRI-based diagnostics.

About Helium:

  • Type: Noble gas (Group 18), atomic number 2, chemically inert (1s² configuration).
  • Physical Property: Has the lowest boiling point (−268.9°C) among all elements.
  • Density: Second lightest element; non-flammable and non-toxic gas.
  • Source: Formed by alpha decay of uranium and thorium in Earth’s crust.
  • Extraction: Obtained from natural gas deposits via fractional distillation.
  • Key Use: Used in cryogenics to cool MRI superconducting magnets (~−269°C).
  • Applications: Used in rocketry (fuel pressurization), deep-sea diving (Heliox), semiconductors, balloons.
  • Special Feature: Exhibits superfluidity (Helium II) near 2.17 K with zero viscosity.
