Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR)

Context: India’s Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR) capacity of ~5.33 million tonnes is only partially filled, with about 36% remaining unutilized.

About SPR:

  • Emergency crude oil stockpile for energy security during supply disruptions. Stored in underground rock caverns for safety and strategic security.
  • Concept emerged after the 1973 Oil Crisis.
  • Maintained by Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited (ISPRL).
  • Storage Locations: Phase-I: Visakhapatnam, Mangaluru, & Padur. Phase-II Expansion: Proposed at Chandikhol (Odisha) and Padur (expansion); Future sites include Bikaner (Rajasthan) and Rajkot (Gujarat).
