ISRO’s Mission MITRA for High-Altitude Astronaut Testing

Context: ISRO has launched Mission MITRA (Mapping of Interoperable Traits and Response Assessment) in Ladakh to study astronauts’ physiological, psychological, and operational performance in high-altitude conditions simulating space environments.

  • Mission MITRA is an Analog mission. Analog missions simulate space-like conditions on Earth to test human and operational responses.
  • High-altitude environments (e.g., Leh ~3,500 m) mimic hypoxia, low temperature, and isolation similar to space missions.
  • Hypoxia: Reduced oxygen availability affecting cognition and physical performance.
  • Human spaceflight requires testing crew endurance, decision-making, and coordination under stress.
  • India’s Gaganyaan mission aims to send humans to space, necessitating such preparatory studies.
