Context: India is set to establish its first Quantum Reference Facility in Andhra Pradesh at SRM University, aimed at creating quantum computing testing infrastructure and strengthening the country’s quantum ecosystem.
- India is developing its first Quantum Reference Facility (QRF), which will function as a testing bed for quantum computing technologies for inauguration on April 14 (World Quantum Day) at Amaravati Quantum Valley.
- The QRF will help in testing and benchmarking quantum hardware and components, which was previously unavailable in India.
- Quantum technology leverages the principles of quantum mechanics – the physics of sub-atomic particles – to develop advanced technologies in computing, sensing, and communication.
- By manipulating phenomena like superposition and entanglement, it enables capabilities far beyond classical physics, such as processing vast data sets in parallel, unbreakable encryption, and ultra-precise measurements.
- The facility will support India’s ambitions under National Quantum Mission (2023) to develop quantum technologies in computing, communication, sensing, and cryptography.
