In News: Scientists in Germany have identified a drug, bemnifosbuvir (currently under trial for hepatitis C), that can block replication of the hepatitis E virus. If trials succeed, it may become the first effective treatment for hepatitis E infections.
- Bemnifosbuvir is an antiviral drug originally developed for the treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.
- It belongs to the class of nucleotide analogues, which mimic natural building blocks of viral genetic material.
- By disrupting the virus’s genetic machinery, it prevents the virus from multiplying inside host cells.
- Recent studies show that it can also block replication of the Hepatitis E virus (HEV), indicating potential for repurposing.
- Â It has demonstrated strong efficacy in animal studies without damaging healthy cells, suggesting a favorable safety profile.
- The concept of drug repurposing (using existing drugs for new diseases) helps reduce time and cost in drug development.
- If clinical trials are successful, it could become the first specific antiviral treatment for Hepatitis E, which currently lacks targeted therapy.
