In News: Unseasonal rains, temperature fluctuations, and cold spells have severely affected Alphonso mango production in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. The disruption during the critical flowering stage has led to reduced yields and heavy losses for farmers.
- Alphonso mango (locally called “Hapus”) is a premium mango variety grown mainly in the Konkan region (Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Raigad) of Maharashtra.
- They were awarded GI tag in 2018.
- Mango cultivation is highly sensitive to climatic conditions, especially during flowering and fruit-setting stages.
- The flowering stage (locally called “mohar”) requires optimal temperatures typically between 19°C and 24°C for successful fruit development.
- Sudden temperature drops or extreme heat can cause flower drop, poor pollination, and reduced fruit set.
- Pests and diseases tend to increase under humid and unstable weather conditions, further reducing crop yield.
- Horticulture crops like mango are high-value but climate-sensitive, making farmers vulnerable to income shocks.
