Context: A recent study suggests that Neanderthals did not go extinct primarily due to climate change but because of weaker social networks compared to Homo sapiens. Better connectivity and migration patterns gave Homo sapiens a survival advantage.

  • Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis) were an extinct species of intelligent, robust human relatives who lived in Europe and Asia roughly 400,000 to 40,000 years ago.
  • Known for their short, muscular bodies adapted for cold climates, they were skilled toolmakers, hunters, and creators of culture who co-existed and interbred with Homo sapiens.
  • Homo sapiens, modern humans, originated in Africa and migrated outward, eventually overlapping geographically with Neanderthals and soon after Neanderthals became extinct.
  • The disappearance of Neanderthals around 40,000 years ago is one of the most enduring mysteries in human evolution. 
  • Earlier theories of Neanderthal extinction included climate change, violent conflict, disease, and competitive exclusion by Homo sapiens.
  • The new study uses suggests that the geographic overlap between the two species was limited (less than 5%), weakening the idea of direct competition as the sole cause of extinction.
