Context:
Muons, produced by cosmic-ray interactions in the atmosphere, are highly penetrating subatomic particles increasingly used beyond fundamental physics. Their unique properties enable advanced imaging techniques like muography, making them valuable across multiple scientific and practical domains.
- Muons are subatomic particles (leptons) formed when cosmic rays collide with Earth’s atmosphere.
- Around 10,000 muons reach every square metre per minute, making them naturally abundant.
- They resemble electrons but are ~207 times heavier (“fat electrons”).
- Due to their mass, they can penetrate hundreds of metres of rock and dense materials.
- They are highly unstable, surviving only ~2.2 microseconds before decaying into electrons and neutrinos.
- Their penetrating ability is used in muography (muon tomography) to image large internal structures.
- Archaeology: Detection of hidden chambers in pyramids (e.g., Giza).
- Volcanology: Mapping internal magma pathways in volcanoes (e.g., Mount Vesuvius).
- Nuclear science: Imaging damaged reactors like Fukushima for internal assessment.
- Security & industry: Used in cargo scanning, customs inspection, and structural integrity analysis of large infrastructure.
