Context:
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has restored the sunken dance pavilion (Kalyana Mandapam) of the Thousand Pillar Temple at Hanamkonda, Telangana, after a 42-year-long conservation effort. The restoration revived the Kakatiya-era architectural structure using traditional sand-box foundation techniques and scientific stone-by-stone reconstruction methods.
- The Thousand Pillar Temple is located at Hanamkonda in Telangana and was built during the Kakatiya dynasty in the 12th century under King Rudra Deva.
- The temple is dedicated to the trinity of Shiva, Vishnu and Surya, reflecting the syncretic temple traditions of medieval South India.
- Kakatiya architecture is known for highly polished dolerite stone, intricately carved pillars, star-shaped platforms, mandapams and advanced structural engineering techniques.
- The temple’s famous Kalyana Mandapam (dance pavilion) reportedly sank due to weakening of the traditional sand-box foundation system caused by water seepage and structural neglect.
- Sand-box technique is an ancient temple foundation technology using sand, lime, gravel and charcoal layers to absorb vibrations and improve stability during earthquakes or soil movement.
- The monument is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the premier organisation responsible for conservation of centrally protected monuments under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.
- The Kakatiya Rudreshwara (Ramappa) Temple in Telangana was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021, highlighting the global recognition of Kakatiya architectural heritage
