Girmitiya Heritage and India’s Diaspora Cultural Diplomacy

Context:

India and Trinidad and Tobago recently signed an agreement to help people of Indian origin trace their ancestral roots and reconnect with family histories. The initiative is linked to preserving the legacy of the Girmitiya community and strengthening cultural ties with the Indian diaspora.

  • “Girmitiya” refers to Indians taken as indentured labourers to British colonies during the 19th and early 20th centuries after the abolition of slavery.
  • The term originated from the word “agreement,” locally pronounced as “girmit.”
  • Large numbers of Indians migrated to Trinidad and Tobago, Fiji, Mauritius, Guyana, Suriname, and South Africa under the indenture system.
  • Most migrants were taken from present-day Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and surrounding regions.
