Context:

The Central Government has extended the tenure of CBI Director Praveen Sood by one year. The decision was taken on the recommendation of the statutory Selection Committee.

  • The CBI functions under the Delhi Special Police Establishment (DSPE) Act, 1946.
  • The Director of the CBI is appointed by the Central Government on the recommendation of a three-member committee under the provisions of the Delhi Special Police Establishment (DSPE) Act, 1946, as amended by the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013.
  • The Selection Committee consists of the Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, and Chief Justice of India or a Supreme Court judge nominated by the CJI.
  • The committee recommends senior IPS officers based on integrity, experience, and competence.
  • The Director has a minimum tenure of two years to ensure institutional independence.
  • The Central Government can grant annual extensions up to a maximum total tenure of five years.
