Context:
The European Union has re-included India in the list of countries permitted to export aquaculture products to EU markets from September 2026. The decision follows India’s compliance with EU restrictions on the use of antimicrobials in food-producing animals.
- Aquaculture refers to the farming of fish, crustaceans, molluscs, and other aquatic organisms for commercial production.
- India is one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of shrimp and seafood products, with the EU being an important export destination.
- The European Union imposes strict Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) standards to ensure food safety and prevent health risks from imported food products.
- Antimicrobials and antibiotics are regulated in aquaculture because excessive use can cause Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), a major global public health concern.
- The EU prohibits use of certain antimicrobials for growth promotion in food-producing animals and closely monitors residue levels in imported seafood.
- India improved traceability systems, residue monitoring, certification, and quality control measures to meet EU norms.
- Compliance with international food safety standards strengthens India’s marine exports, foreign exchange earnings, and fisheries sector growth.
