Context:
At the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting, member countries reaffirmed support for the creation of an independent and viable Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. However, disagreements among some members on West Asia-related issues prevented the release of a joint statement.
- The Israel–Palestine conflict is rooted in competing territorial and political claims over historic Palestine.
- The internationally supported Two-State Solution proposes independent states of Israel and Palestine living peacefully side by side.
- The proposed Palestinian state is generally based on the pre-1967 borders, referring to boundaries before the Six-Day War (1967).
- Israel occupied the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Gaza Strip, and Golan Heights after the 1967 war.
- East Jerusalem is claimed by Palestinians as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
- The United Nations General Assembly granted Palestine “non-member observer state” status in 2012.
- BRICS is a grouping of major emerging economies promoting multilateralism, Global South cooperation, and reform of global governance institutions.
- The issue also involves strategic regions such as the Strait of Hormuz, Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, and Red Sea, important for global energy trade and maritime security.
