Context:

Rahul Gandhi unveiled a statue of Veera Pasi in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, highlighting the role of marginalised communities in the 1857 Revolt.

  • Veera Pasi is remembered in local folklore as a Pasi warrior and companion of Rana Beni Madhav Baksh Singh, who fought against the British during the Revolt of 1857.
  • The Revolt of 1857 was India’s first major anti-colonial uprising, involving soldiers, peasants, zamindars, local rulers and various social groups across North India.

  • The Pasi community is a Dalit community with significant presence in Uttar Pradesh, making such commemorations socially and politically important.
  • The event has brought attention to Dalit history, local memory, and the political importance of the Pasi community in Uttar Pradesh.
