Context:
Non communicable diseases accounted for around 60% of all deaths in India during 2022–2024, showing a major shift in India’s mortality pattern. The rise is visible not only in urban areas but also among rural populations, women and younger age groups.
- Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are diseases that do not spread from one person to another through infection.
- They are generally long-duration diseases that develop slowly and require continuous prevention, screening and treatment.
- Major NCDs include cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, chronic kidney diseases and digestive disorders.
- NCDs are increasing because India is undergoing an epidemiological transition, where infectious disease deaths decline but lifestyle-related and age-related diseases rise.
- Ageing population increases NCD risk because hypertension, heart disease, diabetes and cancer become more common with age.
- Unhealthy diet, high salt, sugar, trans fats, processed foods and low intake of fruits and vegetables increase obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
- Physical inactivity, sedentary jobs, urban lifestyle and reduced manual work increase metabolic disorders.
- Tobacco, alcohol and air pollution raise the risk of cancer, stroke, heart disease and respiratory diseases.
- Stress, poor sleep and mental health issues are emerging contributors, especially among working-age groups.
- NCDs are now rising even in rural India due to changing diets, pollution, tobacco use, poor screening and weak primary healthcare.
