Context:

The sacred relics of Arhat Sariputra and Arhat Mahamoggallana, the two chief disciples of Lord Buddha, were ceremonially enshrined at Gandantegchenling Monastery in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The event marks an important milestone in India–Mongolia cultural and spiritual relations on the occasion of Buddha Purnima / Vesak Day 2026.

  • Buddha Purnima, also called Vesak Day, commemorates the birth, enlightenment and Mahaparinirvana of Gautama Buddha.
  • Sariputra and Mahamoggallana were the two chief disciples of Buddha and are highly revered in Buddhist traditions.
  • Sariputra is associated with wisdom and deep understanding of Buddhist doctrine, while Mahamoggallana is associated with spiritual powers and discipline.
