Context:
Government is celebrating the “10 Years of PMSMA Scheme” – A Decade of Care Celebrations.
Explanation:
- PMSMA was launched on June 9, 2016 by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare to provide assured antenatal care to pregnant women.
- Under PMSMA, special antenatal care check-up sessions/camps are organised on the 9th day of every month at designated government health facilities.
- The programme mainly covers pregnant women in their 2nd and 3rd trimesters for regular examination, counselling and monitoring.
- It gives special focus to high-risk pregnancies, including malnutrition, adolescent pregnancy, early pregnancy, severe anaemia and gestational diabetes.
- PMSMA provides free services, including antenatal check-ups, ultrasound, blood tests, urine tests, medicines, Iron Folic Acid tablets and calcium supplements.
- A Red Sticker system is used on Mother and Child Protection cards to identify and track high-risk pregnancies for priority medical care.
