A Black Hole’s Elusive Wind: Sagittarius A (Source: The Hindu)

Context:

For over 50 years, astronomers suspected that Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way, was blowing powerful winds of hot gas into space but lacked direct evidence. A new study using the ALMA telescope in Chile has now provided the first definitive proof, resolving one of astrophysics’ longest-standing observational puzzles.

Sagittarius A and the Mystery of Black Hole Winds

About Sagittarius A*:

  • Sagittarius A is the supermassive black hole sitting at the centre of our Milky Way galaxy, millions of times more massive than the Sun, and is now confirmed to be actively blowing a wind of hot gas outward into space.
  • Researchers used five years of data from the ALMA telescope in Chile to detect a large cone-shaped clearing in the gas surrounding the black hole, at least 3.2 lightyears long, formed by this outward-blowing wind.
  • When gas is pulled toward the black hole, it swirls and accelerates rather than falling straight in. Friction from these swirling heats the gas to millions of degrees, eventually turning it into a superheated plasma that gets pushed outward as wind.
  • This wind acts as a natural regulator of the galaxy by blowing away gas that would otherwise form too many stars. If unchecked, excessive star formation and subsequent stellar explosions could strip the galaxy of all its gas, permanently halting the Milky Way’s ability to grow and evolve.
