Context:
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy organised a National Workshop on the Small Hydro Power Development Scheme and launched scheme guidelines for accelerating SHP development across India.
About Small Hydro Power Development Scheme:
- Small Hydro Power refers to hydropower projects generally up to 25 MW capacity in India.
- It is promoted by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
- SHP projects use the energy of flowing water from streams, canals, rivers and small dams.
- It is a renewable energy source with relatively low emissions and decentralised potential.
- SHP can support energy access, local economic development and grid stability.
- It is especially useful in remote, hilly and rural areas where large grid connectivity may be difficult.
- The scheme aims to unlock India’s untapped small hydro potential through coordination among States, nodal agencies, developers and technical institutions.
