Context:
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitated the first export of fresh Uttarakhand litchi from Dehradun to Italy on 18 June 2026. The one-tonne consignment marks the fruit’s entry into the European market.

- APEDA is a statutory body under the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
- It was established under the APEDA Act, 1985, which came into force in 1986, replacing the Processed Food Export Promotion Council.
- APEDA promotes exports of scheduled products, including fruits, vegetables, cereals, meat products, dairy products, processed foods, floriculture and organic products.
- Its functions include exporter registration, quality standards, packaging improvement, market development, export-oriented production and financial assistance.
- Fresh-fruit exports require compliance with phytosanitary measures, food-safety standards, residue limits, grading, traceability and cold-chain management.
- Dehradun litchi is known for its red colour, sweetness, delicate aroma and juicy pulp.
- Such exports support agricultural diversification, farmers’ income, value-chain development and India’s access to premium international markets.
