Context:
Commercial production has begun at the Jonnagiri Gold Mine in Andhra Pradesh, currently India’s largest operating private gold mine. It is expected to produce about 400 kg in 2026–27, eventually increasing output to nearly one tonne annually.
Explanation:
- Jonnagiri is located in Tuggali mandal, Kurnool district, in the mineral-rich Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh.
- It is an open-pit mine with an integrated gold-processing facility, developed by Geomysore Services India Private Limited.
- Around 12 tonnes of mineable gold have presently been identified, while further exploration may increase the resource base.
- Mineral resources indicate geological occurrence, whereas mineral reserves are the economically and legally extractable portion.
- Gold is extracted from ore through crushing, grinding, concentration and metallurgical processing before refining.
- Gold mining is regulated principally by the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 and associated mineral-conservation rules.
- Primary gold attracts a 4% royalty, calculated using the London Bullion Market Association price; royalty revenue accrues to the State government
