Context:
According to the World Bank’s 2026 Global Gas Flaring Tracker Report, global gas flaring rose to 167 billion cubic metres (bcm) in 2025, with nine countries accounting for 83% of total flaring. The report highlights that reducing routine flaring can improve energy security, lower emissions and reduce economic losses.

Explanation:
- Gas flaring is the burning of associated natural gas produced during oil extraction when it is not captured or utilised.
- Flaring releases carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄), contributing to climate change and wasting valuable energy resources.
- The Global Flaring and Methane Reduction Partnership (GFMR) is a World Bank-led initiative to reduce routine flaring and methane emissions.
- Routine gas flaring can be eliminated through gas capture, processing, pipelines and utilisation technologies.
- Captured gas can be used for electricity generation, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) production, industrial use and clean cooking fuel.
- Reducing flaring supports energy security, improves resource efficiency, lowers greenhouse gas emissions and advances SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
