The President of India has appointed three Additional Judges to the Andhra Pradesh High Court, strengthening its judicial capacity and helping reduce the pendency of cases.
Explanation:
- High Court judges are appointed by the President of India under Article 217 of the Constitution.
- The appointment is made after consultation with the Chief Justice of India (CJI), the Governor of the State, and the Chief Justice of the concerned High Court.
- However, practically, The Collegium System at High court level initiates recommendations for appointment and transfer of High Court judges, which will be considered again by Supreme Court Collegium before making final recommendation to President through Law Ministry.
- Additional Judges are appointed under Article 224 to deal with a temporary increase in the workload or backlog of cases.
- An Additional Judge can be appointed for a period not exceeding two years and may later be made a Permanent Judge.
- High Court judges retire at the age of 62 years, while Supreme Court judges retire at 65 years.
- High Courts exercise original, appellate, writ (Article 226) and supervisory jurisdiction over courts within the State.
