Context:
The Indian Navy is set to commission Mahendragiri (F38), the sixth Project 17A indigenous stealth frigate, at Visakhapatnam on 11 July 2026. The warship highlights India’s progress in indigenous naval design, stealth technology and defence manufacturing.
Explanation:
- Project 17A is India’s programme to build advanced indigenous stealth guided-missile frigates as successors to the Shivalik-class frigates.
- A frigate is a medium sized naval warship used for escort, patrol, anti -submarine warfare, anti-air warfare and maritime security operations.
- Stealth features reduce a ship’s radar signature, making it harder for enemy sensors to detect and track.
- Mahendragiri was designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai.
- It has over 75% indigenous content, supporting Aatmanirbhar Bharat, MSMEs and India’s defence industrial base.
- It uses CODOG propulsion, meaning Combined Diesel or Gas, allowing efficient cruising and high-speed operations.
- It is equipped for anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, along with HADR, Search and Rescue and Indo-Pacific maritime security roles.
