Context
The VAR system in football became controversial after the recent Argentina–Egypt match in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Egypt complained that some refereeing decisions were questionable and affected the final result, raising concerns about the fairness and consistency of VAR.
Explanation:
- VAR means Video Assistant Referee. It is a system in which another referee watches video replays to help the main referee on the field.
- Its purpose is to correct major mistakes that may wrongly decide whether a team scores, receives a penalty or loses a player.
- VAR checks four major situations: whether a goal is valid, whether a penalty should be given, whether a player deserves a direct red card and whether the wrong player was punished.
- When video officials notice a possible mistake, they inform the main referee through a headset.
- The main referee may accept their advice or watch the incident again on a small screen beside the field. The final decision remains with the main referee.
- In the Egypt–Argentina match, Egypt scored a goal, but VAR detected an earlier foul by an Egyptian player. After watching the replay, the referee cancelled the goal.
- VAR is controversial because similar incidents may receive different decisions. Reviews can also interrupt the match and leave players and spectators confused.
- Following the controversy, FIFA decided to appoint two in-house VAR officials for every match from the quarterfinals onwards to improve checking and consistency
