Context: An ICMR-INDIAB national study has found that nearly 9 in 10 Indian adults have at least one lipid abnormality, with low High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) being the most common.

Explanation
- Dyslipidemia is an abnormal level of blood lipids, including high LDL, low HDL, high triglycerides or high total cholesterol, increasing the risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs).
- HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) is “good cholesterol” that removes excess cholesterol from arteries, while LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) is “bad cholesterol” that promotes plaque formation.
- Major risk factors include sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy diet, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, insulin resistance, tobacco use and genetic predisposition.
- Dyslipidemia is a major modifiable risk factor for coronary artery disease, stroke and peripheral arterial disease, making early screening, regular physical activity and a balanced diet essential.
