Context
Scientists at IASST, Guwahati, have demonstrated the use of borophene as a lubricant additive in castor oil. Adding only 0.1 wt.% borophene reduced friction by about 42%, improving energy efficiency and machinery life.

Explanation
- Borophene is a two-dimensional nanomaterial composed of boron atoms.
- Castor oil is a renewable, biodegradable base lubricant suitable for green lubrication.
- Borophene disperses uniformly in castor oil without chemical modification.
- During operation, it forms a protective tribofilm containing iron oxides, carbonaceous species and boron compounds.
- The tribofilm lowers shear stress, surface roughness and mechanical wear.
- It improves load-bearing capacity and reduces the coefficient of friction.
- Potential applications include marine systems, renewable-energy equipment and sustainable manufacturing.
