Context
DRDO successfully conducted the first flight test of the Project Kusha Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LR-SAM) from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha.

Explanation:
- Project Kusha is an indigenous, long-range surface-to-air missile system developed by DRDO for the Indian Air Force
- The indigenous system is intended to intercept high-altitude aerial threats at ranges of up to 400 km, reducing dependence on imported systems such as the S-400.
- It is designed to counter fighter aircraft, cruise missiles, drones and other high-altitude aerial threats.
- It includes missiles, radars and a networked command-and-control system, providing layered air defence.
- It will complement the Integrated Air Defence Weapon System, comprising QRSAM, VSHORADS and directed-energy weapons.
- The system supports Atmanirbhar Bharat, strategic autonomy and reduced dependence on imported S-400 systems.
