Context
The Ministry of Civil Aviation inaugurated Hub & Spoke International Flight Operations from Amritsar, making it the second spoke airport after Varanasi under India’s International Aviation Hub Strategy.
Explanation
- The Hub-and-Spoke model is an aviation network in which passengers from spoke airports are routed through a central hub airport to access multiple domestic and international destinations efficiently.
- Under the scheme, passengers complete check-in, baggage tagging, immigration and customs at the spoke airport, enabling seamless transfers at the hub without repeating these formalities.
- The strategy seeks to develop Indian airports as international transit hubs, reducing dependence on foreign hubs such as Dubai, Doha, Singapore and Istanbul for connecting flights.
- The initiative improves network connectivity, aircraft utilisation, load factors, operational efficiency and passenger convenience, while supporting tourism, trade and regional economic development.
- India’s aviation sector is regulated by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).
- The strategy complements UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik), airport infrastructure expansion and the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 by creating a globally competitive aviation ecosystem.
