Context
The Prime Minister paid tribute to Pingali Venkayya on his 150th birth anniversary, recognising his seminal contribution to India’s freedom struggle and his role in designing the Indian National Flag (Tiranga).
Explanation
- Pingali Venkayya (1876–1963) was a freedom fighter, agriculturist, and the designer of the prototype of the Indian National Flag.
- At the 1921 All India Congress Committee (AICC) session in Bezwada (now Vijayawada), he presented a flag design to Mahatma Gandhi, which was later modified.
- On 22 July 1947, the Constituent Assembly adopted the present National Flag.
- The Tiranga has three horizontal bands—Saffron, White, and Green—with the navy-blue Ashoka Chakra (24 spokes) at the centre, replacing the earlier charkha.
- The Flag Code of India, 2002 regulates the display and use of the National Flag, while respect for the flag is protected under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.
