Context
Europe is witnessing one of its most severe wildfire seasons, with large-scale fires in countries such as Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Cyprus. Scientists attribute the increasing intensity of these fires to climate whiplash, prolonged heatwaves, drought and the formation of pyrocumulonimbus (fire) clouds.

Explanation
- Wildfires are uncontrolled fires that spread through forests, grasslands or shrublands; they are natural in some ecosystems but become destructive under extreme weather conditions.
- Climate whiplash refers to rapid shifts between unusually wet and dry conditions, leading to abundant vegetation followed by dry, highly flammable fuel.
- Heatwaves, low humidity, strong winds and prolonged drought increase the likelihood and intensity of wildfires.
- Intense fires can generate Pyrocumulonimbus (PyroCb) clouds, towering thunderstorm clouds formed by the heat of the fire, which may produce lightning and create new fires.
- Wildfires release carbon dioxide (CO₂) and destroy vegetation, reducing carbon sinks and creating a positive climate feedback that can intensify global warming.
