Context
India has designated Glaw Lake in Arunachal Pradesh as its 101st Ramsar Site, making it the State’s first wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.
Explanation
- Wetlands are areas where water covers the land permanently or seasonally and include lakes, marshes, mangroves, floodplains and peatlands.
- The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty adopted in 1971 at Ramsar, Iran, for the conservation and wise use of wetlands; World Wetlands Day is observed on 2 February.
- A Ramsar Site is a wetland designated as being of international importance based on ecological, hydrological and biodiversity criteria.
- Glaw Lake is a pristine freshwater lake in the Eastern Himalayas, fed by perennial mountain streams and located within Kamlang Tiger Reserve, supporting rich biodiversity including over 150 tree species and 49 orchid species.
- Wetlands provide ecosystem services such as water security, flood moderation, groundwater recharge, carbon sequestration and habitat for migratory birds.
